From fish van to full blown restaurant.
It all started in an old boat club, selling fresh catch door-to-door during lockdown. Fast forward a few wild years, a few awards, and a few floods – and Lir was born. A seafood restaurant, fishmongers, and deli rolled into one, rooted in the North Coast and run by Rebekah & Stevie McCarry.
“The couple know each of the fishermen who supply their stock, and at the top of every menu is a list of the boats that delivered today's catch.”
National Geographic, February 2025
A restaurant built around the sea, and whatever’s fresh.
Lir isn’t about tasting menus and white tablecloths. It’s about good fish, cooked properly, by people who give a damn.
The menu changes every day depending on what comes in – sometimes it’s monkfish, sometimes it’s conger eel. Minimum waste, no shortcuts, no apologies if we run out of crab.
The room’s small, the playlist’s questionable, and the food’s some of the best you’ll find on this island.
“Worthy of a pilgrimage”
Belfast Telegraph, December 2024
